One of the most charming and character laden areas in Reno is the Old Southwest. This neighborhood boasts meticulously maintained historic homes from the 1920’s to 1940’s. Many architectural styles are represented: from Colonial Revival to French Chateau, as well as quite a few varieties of bungalows and cottages. This historic area spans several blocks to the East and to the West of Arlington Ave with California Ave to the North and Mount Rose St to the South. Most of the homes on the West side of Arlington are within a sub-neighborhood called Newlands Manor named for Senator Francis G. Newlands who, through his Reclamation Act of 1902 brought large-scale irrigation to the state. Newlands mansion (built in 1890) and a few others in this neighborhood have since been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The East side of Arlington Avenue features smaller homes as well as many multi-family dwellings and buildings that have been converted from residential use to commercial. Mount Rose Elementary School, one of the two Elementary schools that this neighborhood is zoned for is also located in this community. Located on Lander Street, Mount Rose Elementary School built in 1912 as one of four Mission Revival style schools in the state, is the only one remaining operational school today.
Old Southwest Reno boasts nostalgia from every corner from the architecture of the homes to the attitudes of the residents. Most of the year neighbors are out chatting with each other, strolling through the streets, walking their dogs, jogging, biking, or beatifying their gardens. The close proximity to the shops and restaurants on California and Virginia streets makes this spot ideal to ditch the car and walk.
